We awoke for breakfast with rain still in the forecast. We dawned some of our rain clothes to head for our next stop in Carbondale. We decided to take an easier route of about 50 miles across the Mississippi Levy which was not as hilly as another route might be.
Again the car would not start. AAA came to jump it and Carol drove off to Carbondale to have it looked at again. She was told the theory that the keypad to unlock the doors might be causing the intermittent drain on the battery.
We did encounter many many coal trucks on the road to the levy hauling the stuff to the river where thousands of tons of coal waited to be loaded on barges on the river. Each time we had a truck approaching from the rear we moved off the road to let them pass. Once we got onto the levy no cars or trucks were there to bother our progress across a very flat area with standing water and farms growing corn.
We stopped after 24 miles at a little bar and grill on the advice of a truck driver for lunch. He told us there was no more places to eat before Carbondale. We are glad we stopped for chicken sandwiches as it was interesting talking to the young lady who owned the bar with her husband who worked for the coal company as an IT tech. While she claimed to not be political and living in her own bubble she did not mind telling us how bad the politicians are, especially Obama and Clinton. We talked around the subject as there was no reason to change minds and other customers came into the bar for lunch.
On our way out the door we ran into 2 guys from Boston who were riding on their way to Washington and who had been riding with the guy we met the day before at our hotel, Peter who was riding to California. We talked about our experiences with dogs, them in Kentucky and us in New Mexico.
Starting again in very humid and hot conditions we headed on to Carbondale where we stayed at a Best Western with dinner at a nice bar and grill.
The following are photos of the day including the levy and the coal operations:
