Day 9 - Williams to Flagstaff

The road to Flagstaff

The day started with a dead battery again in the SAG vehicle.  AAA was on the job at 7:30AM and Carol was off to catch up with us.  Mark and I got started before 9AM knowing that we had some more climbing to do, as we would be entering ski country with threatening skies.

After our meal at the hotel we entered route 40 to ride to Flagstaff.  We could see the high country in the distance and knew we would climb to 6,800 feet.  Meanwhile Carol headed off to meet with another AAA truck to have a new battery installed. She met a very nice Pueblo Indian who brought her battery to her and installed it.

Richard installed the battery and posed for a photo

Mark and Terry stopped at a store near Flagstaff to dawn rain gear as the skies were spitting droplets on us and threatened to get worse.  We met the manager who after hearing we were on a mission for cancer offered us free hot chocolate and some good conversation. We met a couple locals there who had interesting ideas about current politics.

We met Carol early afternoon and waited while the battery was being installed.  Flagstaff is hilly, especially on the Northern Arizona campus.  Using GPS to find our way we went on serpentine route up and down hills on that campus to The Beaver Street Brewery to have some late lunch and a beer.

Mark is a happy man with his beer at the brewery

After our lunch we followed GPS on another serpentine route to the hotel.

Carol had brought half of her sandwich to the hotel for dinner.  Mark and I went to an IHOP next to the hotel where we had our late meal and talked to a student who was getting her Dental Hygiene Degree and was headed back to Tucson for her work.

Meanwhile the weather had improved, but we were told that a huge storm was on its way.   We hoped to be gone before that happened the following day.

Good night sleep in Flagstaff, breakfast and on the bikes
Goodbye Flagstaff
